Swing Scene

reflections, rants, & raves about swing dancing, dancers, & dances

The Private Collection

I love this weekend. Yes it’s mine, so I’m biased, but I still love this weekend. And I loved having in Knoxville. KSDA, and especially Scott Richen who played my point man on the ground, was extremely helpful and made for a very successful event. Our volunteers were great, the dances had great attendance, and the classes all went well (as I’m aware).

Yes there were some problem:

  1. Saturday night, preparing for the instructor battle (which was a stroke of genius BTW – thanks to Patrick and Natalie for helping form the idea while I was at ATLX) my wife and I had a freak dancing accident. I say freak because she hit her throat on my head – huh?! Who does that? This wouldn’t be such an issue if she wasn’t an opera singer and this hadn’t been just a few days before she went to Europe to sing for the summer. She’s healing an will be fully recovered (knock on wood) before she actually has to perform.
  2. The hotel we all (instructors) stayed at. Just read my review of the Roadway Inn.
  3. DJ schedule – we were a little delayed getting a DJ schedule up and thus some of our DJs on the first night didn’t know to be there earlier than later.

Anything past that was just a minor inconvenience.

The best parts of the weekend:

  1. The Instructor Battle on Saturday night. Married vs. Single throw down. Marrieds brought it, I was actually a little let down by the singles. They hyped themselves pretty well but didn’t bring much to the fight. This was far better than any instructor jam ever, though.
  2. The Square Dance Center just makes for such a great venue. If only there was a fourth room.
  3. Of course all those in attendance (we were around 80 who actually took workshops, and over 100 for both dances).
  4. The Flyers for the Swing & Soul weekend in Atlanta. Sorry Dan, Revival Day looks like fun, but these guys know how to advertise a party. I’m all jazzed up about this.

The verdict is that I’m very pleased with the Private Collection. Originally I planned to take the idea for the workshop to a different South East cities each year. I still like that idea, but I loved having this event in Knoxville. I guess that means I’ll have to think of another even to do each year. Shoot.

Looks like a good event. Will it be back next year?

We are planning on it. Nothing is set firm yet, but it’s been going on straight since 2002, the new format was well received, and there some other ideas floating around to make it even better next year.
