Event Marketing Thoughts

Posted by spectaprod on June 6, 2007

Wow! It has been a long while since I’ve ruminated here.

I’m now in the run up to the Private Collection (June 29). This is typically the point when registrations really begin to pick up, at least that’s the case with my past experience; other organizers have agreed with that observation. But registrations have really slowed down.

So what did I do differently? Really the question is: ”what did I do wrong?”

  1. I tried to approach this Private Collection doing everything online. The impression I have is that flyers don’t really work that well. That isn’t entirely true, flyers work well, but only as part of a multichannel strategy.
  2. Even though I tried to do everything online I neglected MySpace.com. I am not a proponent of myspace pages for events. I ignore those completely, but I failed to utilize MySpace to get the word out and instead relied on forum bulletin boards, and emails.
  3. I did not create a cohesive plan. My updates were not regular, I was not regularly updating the website, posting to forums, emailing etc. Couple that with a very limited flyer presence at events throughout the South East and may people still have only heard of the event, but have no details or anything to tell them, “this is a cool event, you need to go.”

So learn from my mistakes. Get the work out early, often, and in every medium you have access too. Oh, and come to the Private Collection, it’s gonna be an awesome time.

you should put a contact address or phone number on the website. I signed up but have not heard anything more than is on the website (confirmation? housing?)
